Can I be a transcendentalist?

Today I began the process of recording the first segment of a thought experiment that I intend to conduct. My goal is to explore the ideas of transcendentalism within the context of modern society. I am interested to see if it is possible for a balance to exist between modern life, which in many cases requires the use of technology, and the principles of transcendentalist ideas. In particular, I am interested in how the ideas of transcendentalism which were explored by writers such as Emerson and Thoreau apply to the modern world. These individuals may not have agreed with some of the dependence that many people have on technology. I am interested in exploring how some technologies such as online bill paying, RFID security, medical technology, GPS, and smart devices all fit into the notion of transcendental ideas.

I realize that transcendentalism is not just about technology. There are many other aspects of it to explore as well such as begin self-reliant and the influence of nature. The very fact that I am creating this blog to share my ideas in writing with you is a paradox to the very principles of transcendentalism as I currently understand it. Perhaps that notion is incorrect and will change as my research progresses.
